A tense protest outside the official residence of New York City’s mayor turned into a major security incident after two men were charged with federal terrorism offenses linked to improvised explosive devices.
Authorities say two suspects, Emir Balat (18) and Ibrahim Kayumi (19) allegedly threw homemade explosive devices near Gracie Mansion, the residence of Zohran Mamdani. The incident occurred during a heated demonstration and counter-protest on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

According to investigators, the suspects traveled from Pennsylvania and brought improvised explosive devices (IEDs) made using the highly volatile chemical TATP, sometimes referred to by bomb experts as the “Mother of Satan.” The explosive has been used in several terrorist attacks globally because it is extremely unstable and powerful.
Federal prosecutors say the devices were designed to cause serious harm and were packed with materials such as nuts and bolts to increase potential casualties. Fortunately, none of the devices detonated, and both suspects were arrested shortly after the incident.
Authorities also discovered an additional suspicious device in a vehicle linked to the suspects.
Investigators say the men were inspired by propaganda from the Islamic State militant group (ISIS) and allegedly expressed support for the organization. One of the suspects reportedly told investigators he wanted to carry out an attack that would be even more devastating than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing.
The suspects now face several federal charges, including attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.

The protest where the incident occurred had already been tense. A far-right demonstration organized near the mayor’s residence drew counter-protesters, leading to clashes before the explosives were thrown.
Mayor Mamdani was not at home at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported. Authorities say the investigation is continuing with involvement from the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.
The episode underscores how quickly political demonstrations can escalate and how seriously law enforcement treats the use of explosives in crowded urban environments.
